How Has COVID Affected Car Shipping To Canada?

COVID19 is not as strong as it once was back in 2020, thanks to mass vaccination and people actually following most precautions. However, when it comes to auto shipping, a business where being out on the road is a necessity, you cannot stop but wonder; how things have been amid the pandemic? And are they back to normal? To find out the answer, you need to go through this brief blog post.

Other Modes of Shipping:

When the COVID19 hit the car transport industry, many shipping companies started taking other routes to move vehicles which involved air and sea shipping. Since there were lockdowns and roads were blocked, getting the car carrier across was a big problem.

This was when sea and air shipping was in full swing. However, the cost to ship a car was very expensive, and COVID made these shipping modes even costlier. The worst situation due to COVID was from February 2020 to May 2020; lockdowns didn’t allow auto shippers to move vehicles by land, so people with urgent transport needs had to opt for sea or air freight.

Shipping Via Land & Border Closures:

After May 2020, things started getting a little relaxed for road-based car transport, and that’s when people again started using car shipping via land. However, there still was some hesitation among people, especially those getting the vehicles across the border. Most borders were closed, even U.S to Canada. So there was ambiguity among many clients whether to ship their cars or wait for some time.

However, auto shipping companies started educating their customers about transport during COVID19, and that national and international shipping is going on in full swing. Since transporters are mostly allowed to cross borders even during border closures, auto shippers didn’t face any problem. So when people came to know about this, the momentum of the car transport company came back to normal by the end of 2020.

What Precautions Car Transport Companies are Taking?

Since there were frequent lockdowns in 2020, people were afraid to get out with their vehicles, especially on a long-distance travel. So because of that, many used car shipping services, especially those returning homes from college or snowbirds going back to their homes in summers.

However, people were very choosy in who they work with, and they were right in doing so. CDC released some precautions which are true for car transport as well. Companies that were (still are) following those guidelines gained most business. Here’s an overview:

  • Wear a clothed mask. The carrier, as well as the customer, should both wear a clothed mask when meeting in person
  • The carrier should maintain 6-feet of distance with the customer
  • Both the carrier and the customer should wear disposable gloves because the exchange of transport documents and using the carrier’s pen to sign the documents poses some risk.
  • Sanitize the car after delivery from both inside out, especially on areas where you will be touching it like the handles, steering, gear rod, dashboard, etc.

Parting Words:

The COVID disrupted the car shipping industry, but it bounced back to being almost normal in a fairly quick amount of time – 2-3 months, to be precise. This is pretty great for an industry where being on the roads is a necessity, and lockdowns weren’t making it any easier for them to do so.

However, by following all guidelines by the government and ensuring the safety of customers and employees, auto shipping companies not just survived but strived in these testing times.
